DAAD Trip to Bodenschneid

This hike was organized by Annette from DAAD-Freundeskreis after quite a long break. I decided to tag along, since I hadn't made any plans due to the public holiday. The weather was insanely good too, 16.7°C in November, so I couldn't make any excuses. We gathered at the station and quickly realized that we weren't the only ones with an idea to go hiking. The train was full to the brim, everyone was standing. Still, we ignored the signs and boarded the section of the train to Schliersee.

After taking the train and a bus to Spitzingsee, we headed up to Obere Firstalm (1369 m), from which we took the sledges down last winter, and took a short break. I also changed my clothes, since I got myself severely overprepared and overdressed.

The rest of the way up was not as pleasant. The recent rain and snowfall turned the whole mountainside into a consistent slush of mud, puddles, and dirt. Every step we made got us dirtier, the slipping made us slower, and the splashes got water into our shoes.

As we reached the plateau at the top, all of us, and random passer-bys, repeated the same phase: "The route was horrible, we're all dirty and the rubber profile of our shoes is non-existent". In any case, we reached the top of Bodenschneid (1669 m), took a lot of group photos, went to the cross and enjoyed the panorama. It really has some excellent views of Spitzingsee, Schliersee, Tegernsee and München on the horizon. Then we started heading down on the other side of the mountain.

The other side wasn't much better, and going down made the chance of slipping even higher. At some point I split from the group and headed to Rinnerspitz (1611 m), since I skipped it on a recent hike to Wasserspitz (1552 m).

The road from Bodenschneid (1669 m) to it was relatively ok. I got to take a few photos and was practically running uphill. The way down, however, was much more challenging. The same mud covered every surface as before, but the path was also incredibly steep. A few times I nearly fell down trying to gently climb down a 1.0-1.5 meter drop.

I've reached the Georg Jennerwein memorial halfway to Wasserspitz (1552 m) that I've been to before and started going down to Bodenschneidhaus (1365 m). There I reconnected with the group (turns out I arrived 5-6 minutes later than the others). We had some food and drinks and headed down to Neuhaus.

To sum up, it was a good route with some nice views of the surrounding lakes and peaks, suitable for beginners and intermediate hikers, but I would suggest taking it only in good weather.

P.S. Due to an SEV bus we ended up in Schliersee and tried going to Jianni's Greek Restaurant. The waiter ignored our group of 4 people for 20 minutes, then told us they were only allowing people with reservations. This wasn't true, as we saw several walk-in customers getting seated. I told him about it (in German) and he suggested me to leave. Another customer, watching German football at the table near the entrance, shouted at me to go back to my home country. If you check other reviews online, I'm by far not the only one experiencing this kind of behavior at this restaurant. Avoid it at all costs.
