Sleds and Views at Spitzingsee

In the middle of the week, Annette posted an invite to a sledding trip at Spitzingsee. I haven't done any sledding in years, so I was excited to join. The weather was perfect for it, with clear skies and a good amount of snow on the ground. And the group of students who joined were all very friendly and fun to be around.

The hike started off cheerfully, we were maintaining a good pace and enjoying the scenery. There's plenty of ways to get to the top of the mountain, but we took the nicely packed gravel road going up to Firstalm. Some participants were a bit faster than others, so we naturally split into a few groups, chatting along the way.

After we reached Untere Firstalm (1318 m), instead of taking the path up to the higher hut, we took the path going straight up to the ridge. Annette wanted to show the new participants the view from the ridge, and it was definitely worth it!

From the ridge, we went back down to the hut, and continued onwards to Obere Firstalm (1369 m). After a quick toilet break at the hut, we decided to skip the meal inside and instead rented a sled per person for the way down. The sleds were quite new, making the ride down much more enjoyable. Surprisingly, the path was very smooth and didn't have any bumps, which made it a lot of fun to go down.

After reaching the bottom first, overtaking the slower riders, I waited for the others and saw a snowmobile taking the sleds back up to the top. It was cool to see a bunch of sleds being pulled up at once.

Once everyone was at the bottom, we considered taking the bus back to Neuhaus, but instead decided to walk down along the trails and waterfalls ourselves. The way was simple and safe, the trail was quite clear of snow, and there were a lot of other hikers on the way.

At one point, we needed to cross the river on a small bridge, and we noticed a snowman sitting at the other side. Everyone was super excited, and we took a lot of pictures with it. When we were going past Josefstaler Wasserfälle, we stopped for a while to take in the view of the nature and the sound of the water.

At the end, we arrived back at the train station and took the train back home. It was a great day out, and I'm glad I got to experience sledding again after so many years.

If you want to enjoy sledding in the Bavarian Alps, I highly recommend going to Spitzingsee. The trail is well maintained and smooth, unlike others in Bad Tölz or Oberaudorf. You can rent sleds at Obere Firstalm (1369 m), and the ride down is a lot of fun.
